Valentine’s day has its origins in the Roman empire in the festival then celebrated as Lupercalia. The ancient festival was not nearly as romantic as its modern counterpart. In fact, with time, the government imposed a ban on young soldiers getting married as marriage was considered an unnecessary distraction. It was in these times that secret marriages started taking place giving birth to what is now the modern festival of love. At the end of the 5th century the Pope Gelasius I replaced the festival of Lupercalia with St. Valentine's day after St. Valentine who was persecuted for his role in the secret marriages.
